Terrible Freedom

Flint The pseudo-80s filter that's all over Terrible Freedom turns the album something a little more surreal. Walsh's singer/songwriter game is good & the core here is in straightforward songs that know a good hook, but the production tilts it off-road - everything's slightly wonky, like a weird dream. Pleasantly so. Favorite track: Dropout.

Nathan Allebach In my view, this is TW Walsh's most beautifully orchestrated record yet cover to cover. The tones are incredibly unique, the post-80's vibe is prime cruising music, and I can listen to the whole record on repeat engaged with each track. Bravo! Favorite track: Fake Disease.

In Wrath This is definitely worth the money for the digital collection, but you should really spring for the vinyl. goodness. Favorite track: My Generation.

You made me lose my concentration I had so little to begin Your voice was soaked in desperation My voice was wet with juice and gin My mind was on my lack of money My lack of money was on my mind My generation thinks it's funny It will catch up to us in time My generation You watch these superhero movies Buying phones that last a week Crushing oxys in your smoothies Looking sideways when you speak I'll sit right here until it changes It always changes anyway My generation's full of strangers Who wanna stay inside and play

Dropout 04:11
You stand up like you just fell down Swimming up river like you know how to drown And you pave the way With all your proper nouns You genuflect when you should take a rest Bowing to the east and fast asleep in the west You could change your mind With the heart in your chest Just drop out Go for a drive Like your daddy used to do In 1965 And you can listen to the radio All the way to San Francisco A lost pause is all that you found Peeking round the corner for a singular sound And you stop to talk When you hit holy ground The graveyard doesn't care for your type When you're eating your bananas way before they get ripe And you peel that green skin And call your guru on skype Drop out Go for a drive Like your daddy used to do In 1965 And you can listen to the radio All the way to San Francisco Drop out Hitchin' a ride Like your daddy used to do Before he swallowed his pride But you can listen to the radio All the way to San Francisco

High Numbers 03:47
I won't wash a dirty buttondown shirt Apologize to the woman I hurt Turn around when I'm in the dangerous part of town I don't cower every morning I should Talk about my idyllic childhood Realize what's going on right in front of me You can count the numbers high 3, 5, 7, 9 I won't even say goodbye, say goodbye I won't apply for a government grant Wear a tie with a presentable pant Do anything that requires a handshake and smile I stay up reading yesterday's news Solve the crime and keep looking for clues Apply for jobs i never seen the description of You can count the numbers high 3, 5, 7, 9 I won't even say goodbye, say goodbye
4.
Ride It Out 02:44
Leaving the lights on Keeping a bat beneath the bed Killing your question Changing a tire to fix your dread Flipping a quarter Deciding for once and then for all Crossing a border Collapsing the rise into the fall Keep riding you gotta ride it out All the bodies Every mind a single field The past and the future The false, the true, the fake and real
5.
Sit it out for a single life Don't ask me why It might just change your mind Look past who you think you are Cuz it doesn't change with space Or across time Go straight to the darkest place And bring the light that makes The past seem blind Carry on the memory Of people loved in dreams Of future lives The father lives and the father dies The heart bleeds out through the eyes It's fine The bear sleeps in the forest pines The child skips through the dead landmines It's fine My paycheck's on time Wait around for the afterlife But nothing's next but nothing's Left behind Trapped on the gentle slope Of a metal roof Above the diamond mine You need dough but your belly knows The gold's all gone And the market's in decline The roof caved, the sun collapsed But the backward waves Will show you how to climb The father lives and the father dies The heart bleeds out through the eyes It's fine The hermit saves a billion lives While the bats fall from the skies It's fine The athlete runs across the line The corporation just pays a fine It's fine The bear sleeps in the forest pines The child skips through the dead landmines It's fine My paycheck's on time
6.
Transmission from a dying lion's mouth Made mute by a simple misconception By the time you hear it It's gone Shoulda listened when the clouds made wisdom Drawn water from God's own cistern By the time you drink it It's dry Point your eye at the sun that's dying You could do it if you weren't trying The void wants the form to stay alive Recognize a terrible freedom Whatever comes, just let it arrive The motor runs despite a shortage Of a fuel that can burn with justice By the time you start it You're on fire Lift your face to a sky that's weeping Open wide to the dread that's creeping Never let your fear turn you wild Come to terms with a terrible freedom Whatever comes, just let it arrive
7.
Find the strength To let go of the strength To be naive In the face of death Cross the valley of the self To climb Mt. Confusion Take the time To prepare for the flight You could lose it If you're looking for it You might find That you cannot find The universe you were born to This death is a lever Stop trying to be clever You'll be waiting forever Everything's all right You made your bed Out if Indian clouds But you're sleeping On a bed of nails You drive your car To the place where you buy the cars Burn the photos Of your childhood home And the plans for your retirement Cross the valley of the senses And climb the mountain of confusion
8.
They pour out my guts when I ain't looking Nothing to prove, the contract is signed We're just starting the fires the gods use for cooking Did they turn out the lights or am I blind? Shut your eyes one breath at a time Don't come running Shut your eyes and burn the night away You can challenge the sky but you better be nothing The crow never tries to get a job You're telling a lie but you think that you're bluffing You're feeling alone at the heart of the mob Shut your eyes one breath at a time Don't come running Shut your eyes and burn the night away
9.
Fake Disease 03:02
We captured a ghost But we lost the sheet Now he won't shut up He's a little bit cold His body burned In a random fire Some people die Some people live I have my doubts But I can't speak The spirit's strong But the body's weak I drank the blood I just had to try it I made an offer But I didn't buy it We're bored, but we're lazy too You're pointing fingers, but look at you So sick of mind, and ill at ease Breakin' hearts with a fake disease The ransom is high But we don't give in And the children come And we make the switch Blowin' tires on the slightest curb Throwin' laws at every little verb Killin' people when we feel like it We cry in public like we give a shit You burn your body just to get some cash Buyin' garbage that goes in the trash So sick of mind, and ill at ease Breakin' hearts with a fake disease
10.
I won't reveal the things Dearest to me in song They're right in front of me But shining a light feels wrong Stand and shout about The places where you belong But I won't reveal the things Dearest to me in song The mirror's everywhere If you just stop to stare Forever cradles time The vacuum holds the air A view beyond compare I won't reveal the love I feel When I'm not alone I won't exploit the song I sing when nobody's home The mirror's everywhere If you just stop to stare Forever cradles time The vacuum holds the air A view beyond compare I won't reveal the things Dearest to me in song I won't reveal the things Dearest to me in song Is that wrong?
